Get your vehicle carpool ready with these deep cleaning tips

Cleaning tips

If you’ve been practically living out of your car this summer, it’s time to get back into a routine. Before you start picking kids up for school carpool, take a moment and try out these tips on your car’s upholstery.

Test your solution in a small area

There are several different kinds of car upholstery and many different chemicals that can be used to clean them. Before you go too far, be sure to do some research on exactly what kind of fabric you have and then test your solution on a small, unnoticeable area.

Try dish soap

Dish soap is typically mild enough to not damage any fabric but cuts through grease that attracts stains to your seats. Dilute dish soap with water in a spray bottle and spray it onto your stain. Gently scrub with a sponge or brush and then wipe away with a clean rag.

Break out the Borax

Tougher stains may respond well to a mixture of soap, borax and water. Whip the mixture together until foam forms and place the foam on your seat. Brush it in, allow it to sit and then wipe away.

Use a commercial cleaner

If you’re still not having luck or notice lingering smells, you might try a commercial cleaner. You can find a lot of options for sale. These cleaners can be fast acting but also contain harsh chemicals so they should be used with caution.

Don’t forget the small spaces

Often spills get in between seats and into hard to reach areas. A toothbrush is a great tool to have on hand as you clean the inside of your car. Use it to scrub your solution into the stain and also to get areas that are hard to reach.

Remove the mats

Most messes end up on the floor. When you’re giving your car a deep cleaning don’t forget the mats. Mats can easily be removed and sprayed off outdoors. Scrub any stains and rinse thoroughly. Allow the mats to air dry completely before putting them back in the vehicle.

If your upholstery is leather you may need to take extra care. You can purchase a leather-cleaning kit that can make the job easier but be sure to test the chemicals in a small area before doing the whole car.
