Halloween costumes aren’t meant for everyday wear but if you visit more than one trunk or treat or fall festival, chances are your costumes may end up accumulating a little bit of sweat and stains along the way.
Costumes are often not built to handle a lot of wear and tear and so throwing them in the washing machine may lead to disaster. Instead, here are a few steps to ensure your costumes stay looking and smelling great through multiple wears.
1. Pretreat stains
If you happen to notice some candy drips or fruit punch stains, treat them right away with a stain remover. Dab at the spot with the formula and a dry rag until the spot fades or disappears.
2. Follow the Label
It’s always important to review any garment’s care instructions before washing. Many require hand washing only. Some recommend dry cleaning only.
Buttons, sequins and glitter are often ruined by a washing machine, even on the gentle cycle. Don’t risk it!
3. Hand wash with care
To hand wash a costume, turn it inside out and place it in a washing bin with a bit of detergent. Use your hands to gently mix the fabric into the water and knead out any stains.
Rinse carefully, trying to ensure all the soap is released from the fabric. Wring out any excess liquid and let the costume air dry.
4. Trust the Pros
No matter what the care label says on your costumes, we at Legend Cleaners have seen it all and we know just how to treat those fabrics.
Purchasing used costumes is a great way to save money but you should always bring the garment to a professional to have it deep cleaned before wearing. We are happy to help!
