What fabrics need to be dry cleaned?

Washing machines can wreak havoc on clothing with sequins or buttons. Some fabrics don’t respond well to being washed with water. This is where proper dry cleaning comes in! Not sure what of your items needs to be dry cleaned versus laundered? Our expert staff can help.

Dry Cleaning Only Fabrics

  • There are several fabrics that just don’t respond well to washing with water. Linen, wool, rayon and silk may lose its shape or quality when washed in water. Dyes in silk and rayon can easily bleed. Each of these fabrics, when not washed properly, may not last as long as they were designed to. Dry cleaning uses chemicals other than water, along with detergent, to clean while protecting the delicate structure of these items. Washing these items in a washing machine, even gently, may cause permanent damage. If a tag on your favorite sweater says “Dry Clean Only” don’t ignore it!

Ok to wash

  • Cotton typically does not need to be dry cleaned. This fabric can be washed cold or warm with similar colors and dried in a machine. Some synthetic fabrics like polyester, spandex, nylon, acrylic and acetate are OK to wash in a machine but should be hung or laid flat to dry.

Hand Wash

  • Some fabrics may be OK to wash gently by hand and air dry. However, if you notice an article of clothing wearing out or losing shape after being washed at home, take it to a dry cleaner.
